About Cabo de la Vela
Abou
It’s a small fishing village inhabited primarily by the Wayuú indigenous people with a handful of hostels and restaurants. It’s the surrounding area that is the main attraction. You can visit several beaches and see the beautiful scenery of the desert when you visit Cabo de la Vela.
For that reason, the town has become a popular ecotourism destination. It has also become a prime kite surfing location, with several schools where you can learn to kite surf set up towards the end of town. It is also where you can arrange transportation to Punta Gallinas, the farthest point north in Colombia and all of South America.
Around Cabo de la Vela
Nearby you can take a short trip to hike up Pilon de Azucar to see an amazing panorama of the Guajira desert, and experience a sacred place for the Wayuu people. The sunsets from Cabo de la Vela looking West over the Caribbean are incredible, or you can head down to Playa del Pilon after climbing the Pilon and have a dip in the ocean. It’s a quiet little place with not much going on, but you’ll find local hospitality with some small restaurants, and the Wayuu people are known for their woven bags, so if you want to pick up a few gifts for family or friends these make for nice keepsakes.
Accomodation / Restaurant
We recommend Hospedaje El Monaco as a place to sleep. This accommodation offers double rooms with shower and fan/air conditioning.
Our favorite restaurants are VBellaSofia and Juacos.
